As you obviously know, the Montreal Canadiens fell last night at the Bell Centre against Marc-André Fleury and the Minnesota Wild.
However, when we look at the overall NHL standings today, we realize that the night was even worse than we thought, and due to recent losses, things are really starting to spiral for Martin St-Louis’ squad in the standings.
In such a tight playoff race, a four-game losing streak is unforgiving, unfortunately.
Bad news for the Montreal Canadiens today in the overall NHL standings
As the excellent Anthony Marcotte mentions, in addition to the Canadiens’ loss, the Detroit Red Wings, New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators, AND Tampa Bay Lightning all won.
Result: the Canadiens have taken quite a tumble in the standings.
As of today, here’s the updated picture:
The Ottawa Senators have 58 points in 51 games.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have 57 points in 50 games.
The Columbus Blue Jackets have 57 points in 51 games.
The Boston Bruins have 56 points in 53 games.
The Detroit Red Wings have 55 points in 51 games.
The New York Islanders have 53 points in 50 games.
The Montreal Canadiens have 53 points in 51 games.
The New York Rangers have 52 points in 50 games.
The Philadelphia Flyers have 52 points in 53 games.
So, we can see that the Habs have unfortunately dropped quite a bit, and they will need to start winning again soon in Montreal if they want to stay in the playoff mix.
On the eve of a tough Western road trip, it will be a big challenge.
