Here’s one of my favorite stories from the 2025 draft for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens.

It comes from the excellent TVA Sports journalist Anthony Martineau.

As you probably already know, yesterday, during Day 2 of the NHL Draft live from Los Angeles, the Montreal Canadiens selected goaltender Alexis Cournoyer.

With the 145th overall pick (in the 5th round), the Habs chose the 6-foot-3 Quebec-born goaltender.

What’s incredible about this story is that, by selecting Cournoyer, the Montreal Canadiens actually snatched a young player away from Nashville at the very last second.

The Nashville Predators had already invited Alexis Cournoyer to their development camp and he was on his way to Tennessee when the Habs completely changed his plans!

Wow!

It’s an absolutely magical story.

Alexis Cournoyer was about to leave his home for the Predators’ development camp (as an invitee) when he learned he had been selected by the Canadiens.

“I was leaving in 15 minutes! I’m so happy.. I have no words. It’s incredible.”

“Alexis Cournoyer was ready to go to Nashville for the Predators’ development camp. Bags packed. Flight booked. Leaving today.

Then, his childhood team swooped in and drafted him.

A dream come true for the goalie”

Just imagine the scenario for young Cournoyer!

Clearly, the Predators really liked the Quebec goalie and quickly invited him to their camp, but they should have drafted him sooner!

What a story!

Let’s just say the Habs’ pick quickly derailed all his travel plans to Nashville – much to his delight.

The Preds must be regretting their decision today, because they truly lost a solid young goaltender to the Montreal Canadiens.

Nineteen-year-old Alexis Cournoyer stands at 6 feet 3 inches and weighs 195 pounds.

In 21 games this season with the Cape Breton Eagles, he posted 16 wins, 6 losses, and one overtime loss, with a goals-against average of 1.82 and a save percentage of .942.

Especially for junior hockey, that’s incredibly impressive!

More details to follow.
