A little over a week after The Block kicked off its 21st season, fans have weighed in on the show, and it’s not looking great. A lot of people have spoken out in recent years about how much drama is featured in the renovation series, with many fans suggesting it’s all created by producers to match shows like Married At First Sight.

However, it seems as though this year, it’s not dramatic enough, and fans are calling it the “most boring season” yet. Taking to Reddit, one viewer questioned other fans, “Is it just me or is this season bland and boring?”

They added, “The contestants, the stupid rules about [working] overnight, the fact that it is a new build. Time to move back to the roots. It was a renovation show. Bring it back to Sydney as a renovation. A new host would help.”

Viewers divided over The Block being ‘boring’

“Everyone’s usually lovely in the beginning. Wait a bit before you see the crazy,” one person responded.

“Much better contestants… by a country mile,” another said. “But they have the exact same houses, and from what it looks like, with bathrooms, they can’t choose layouts or change anything? Also, they are all choosing from the same shops, from what’s in stock… pretty limited variations then.

“Bedroom weeks will be boring AF right? Insulated Monday morning, trades do the rest until painting and making a flat pack.”

“If the show is focusing more on design and the build then I wish they would find contestants who are either really good tradies (like Kyle, it was great to see his designs each week) or who have a really strong sense of creative interior style (like tam and jimmy, Steph and Gian),” a third suggested.

“I haven’t started watching yet, but I’ll take bland over ‘OMG, BIGGEST BLOCK SCANDAL EVARRR’ again,” someone else joked.

“I have watched every season since the show started, but this year I haven’t had any interest,” another said. “I really think it’s time to revamp the show. Cast more varied, authentic people who aren’t on the show just to get influencer-famous.

“Ditch the massive ‘luxury’ homes and get the contestants to do normal everyday houses… Implement even some level of consistency for judging. That would be a start.”

“I think you are looking for MAFS or Love Island,” one person wrote. “This show seems to be returning to its roots of just building, hopefully.”

“Merge all three, have a renovation island of hot singles who have to renovate with their new spouse,” the OP quipped in response.

“I’m having an opposite experience,” another shared. “It’s felt like the show has gone back to its roots in some ways, and is focusing on building and design rather than on interpersonal drama. The main dramas [last week] revolved around tiling glue and not following Dan’s instructions, rather than, e.g. one contestant potentially sleeping with another contestant’s husband.”

While the late nights, strict deadlines, and pressure cooker environment typically create division amongst the teams, a production insider tells Yahoo Lifestyle that this year’s contestants became one of the closest casts in the show’s history.

“The season wrapped filming in June, and everyone’s shocked that the teams are still friends,” they reveal. “Usually by now, someone’s been kicked out of the group chat or there are people who aren’t talking, but there’s no bad blood whatsoever. It’s baffling to former contestants because this isn’t normally what happens.

“Any drama that plays out on the show has well and truly been resolved by now. The cast love spending time together, and they recently went out for dinner as a group when they reunited in Daylesford for The Block’s media day. It’s amazing to see.”

Meanwhile, host Scott Cam has described this year’s season as “the happiest Block on earth”, and declared at the show’s launch event that this year’s “fantastic” contestants are the best he’s ever seen on the Channel 9 series.

“They’ve been, in my view, the best teams that we’ve ever had on The Block,” he said. “That’s not to say that they’re not a punish at times. It’s not to say that they argue and fight with each other and other teams. It’s not to say that they don’t cause drama and they’re annoying. That’s as good as it gets! It could be a lot worse, let me tell you.”
