Some very surprising news dropped in the NFL today that could be very good news for the Detroit Lions.

Star Cleveland Browns edge Myles Garrett requested a trade after eight seasons with the Browns.

Garrett is sure to have plenty of suitors. He is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year and has reached double digit sacks in each of his last seven seasons with 14 or more in each of the last four years.

The Lions could end up as the team to seize this opportunity to add an elite talent.

In an article discussing potential landing spots for Garrett, Pro Football Focus’ Gordon McGuinness named the Lions as one of the teams who could land Garrett.

A move for Garrett certainly wouldn’t be cheap. ESPN’s Dianna Russini revealed an NFL GM told her it would probably take a first-round pick and either a second rounder or two thirds and a player.

Lions Named a Potential Landing Spot for $125 Million All-Pro

He also has a contract worth $25 million per year and will probably want to work out a new deal with whatever team trades for him as other edge rushers surpass his contract.

However, Garrett could certainly be worth it for the Lions.

They already have one star edge rusher in Aidan Hutchinson, but need somebody else who can consistently get to the quarterback after Hutchinson finished the 2024 season with three and a half more sacks than anybody else on the roster in just five games.

If the Browns really do end up listening to offers for Garrett, it would be surprising for the Lions not to be one of the teams who gives them a call.
