For the second time on this year’s season of The Amazing Race Australia, a team has been eliminated with just seconds to go on their time penalty. YouTube stars and best mates Dom Di Tommaso and Marx Marsters were sent home in Sunday night’s episode after they suffered a 30-minute penalty and fell to the back of the pack.

While viewers were devastated to see the pair become the fifth team to exit the race, many took to social media to call out the show’s editing and question the accuracy of Dom and Marx’s timer. The pair appeared to have just 7 seconds left before Balinese princess Lindy Klim and her daughter Stella were shown jumping on the mat.

“We really believe it was 7 secs? That’s only editing for viewers,” one fan commented, while another added, “I call shenanigans on the timer that we’re seeing on the screen”.

Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle following his elimination, Dom reveals that he and Marx weren’t given access to a clock, watch, or timer to see how long they had left on their penalty while they sat on the sidelines — making it unclear just how accurate the on-screen timer was.

“We’re given the time penalty, and then it’s your best guess until the last team arrives,” he explains. “So you’re kind of guesstimating, but it’s really just sit and hope. That’s the best way to describe it.”

Dom’s reaction to the episode

Dom admits it was “brutal” watching the episode and realising that they could’ve stayed in the race if they had taken the penalty just a few seconds earlier, but they always knew it would be close.

“There was a level of acceptance that we knew it was going to be tight. The challenge that they were doing had a certain amount of time left, and the walk took a certain amount of time, and that was definitely going to be close to half an hour,” he details.

“So we were accepting that this might be it, but remaining hopeful during that period.”

Biggest surprise filming the series

As a long-time fan of The Amazing Race, Dom shares that his experience filming the reality show was very different to his expectations because he thought it would be much easier.

“I think the thing that surprised me the most, compared to watching the show, was how long and how directionless each challenge was,” he remarks. “I think when you watch the show, you kind of assume that there are these giveaways or everything’s just there. It’s not.

“It’s you and your running team, and you’re out there just trying to figure it all out. They’re really big, long days, and there’s a lot of travel in between these challenges. If you miss one thing, you fall way, way back. So the overall intensity of the race all day was what probably took me by surprise.”

Despite his surprise elimination, Dom says he left the reality show without any regrets, and he’s thrilled he was asked to be a part of the star-studded season.

“I was upset that I wasn’t able to win the money on behalf of my charity, which is the National Breast Cancer Foundation, but the experience left me with no regrets whatsoever,” he shares. “The people I met, the places I saw, and the challenges I got to do were unreal.”
