Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier absolutely destroyed WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert in a four-minute speech delivered during her exit interview earlier this week.
Although her statement contained years of player gripes that have snowballed, many agree it was triggered by a non-call late in Game 3 of the Lynx’s semifinals series against the Phoenix Mercury, where Phee suffered an injury.
WNBA legend Candace Parker discussed that controversial play with Indiana Fever forward Aliyah Boston during the recent episode of the “Post Moves Show” podcast.
“In the closing minutes of Game 3, Alyssa Thomas runs through…are we gonna say Phee or the ball? Because there was some controversy on the call. You think that was clean? Or you think it was a foul?” asked Canace.
Phee missed Game 4 with a serious ankle injury
With the Mercury up 80-76 with 28 seconds left in the game, the Lynx set up a play for Collier to get the ball back after she inbounded the ball. But as Phee tried to maneuver her way to the basket, Thomas poked the ball from her, completed the steal and scored on the other end to give Phoenix the insurance points. But that wasn’t the story.
Collier ended up on the ground and in pain. Looking at the replay, the legs of both players made contact after Alyssa’s clean swipe, causing Phee to twist her ankle. She ended up suffering a Grade 2 tear of three ligaments in her ankle and a muscle in her shin, which caused her to miss the next game. Without their best player, the Lynx were eliminated in Game 4.
“If I’m Napheesa, I want that call. She hit the ball, but she went through her leg. Like Alyssa plays that way. She plays aggressive and physical consistently, and I just feel as though sometimes they let her get away with a little bit more than other players on the defensive end, and this is in no way, shape, or form saying that she should change or that it was intentionally dirty,” added Parker.
The Lynx’s head coach was also banned in Game 4
Aside from Collier missing Game 4, the Lynx also faced elimination without head coach Cheryl Reeve, who was suspended by the league after she ranted about the refereeing and called for a change in the officiating team in the Game 3 post-game press conference.
The non-call also elicited many negative reactions from online fans, but the WNBA refs got the backing of their NBA counterparts, via “X.”
“This is NOT a foul,” the post read. “Thomas legally gets to the ball and knocks the ball loose prior to any contact. The leg-to-leg contact is incidental once the ball is clearly loose. This was correctly judged in real time as a no-call, as were the subsequent technical fouls.”
The WNBA is once again caught in the eye of a media firestorm — and this time, it’s Candace Parker who’s lighting it up. The two-time MVP and respected veteran didn’t hold back after a controversial play involving Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier, whose frightening injury late in Game 3 of the playoffs has sparked fierce debate over officiating and player treatment. Parker’s explosive comments have divided fans, players, and analysts — and reopened the league-wide conversation about double standards and star privilege.
It all began when Collier, the Lynx’s leader and All-Star forward, collapsed to the floor in the final seconds after a hard collision under the rim with a Phoenix Mercury defender. While Collier was later diagnosed with a severe ankle sprain — not the catastrophic injury fans feared — the moment sent shockwaves through the league. But what really ignited the controversy was the no-call from referees, who allowed play to continue as Collier lay writhing on the court. The Mercury went on to score in transition, sealing the win and taking a 2–1 series lead.
Moments after the game, Parker — now serving as a studio analyst for ESPN — blasted the officiating and questioned what she described as “a clear double standard” in how certain players are treated. “I’ve watched this league a long time,” she said during the live postgame show. “And I’m just going to say it — there are players who get the benefit of the doubt, and there are players who don’t. They let her [the Mercury defender] get away with more physicality than they ever would if the roles were reversed.”
The remark instantly went viral. Social media exploded with clips of the play, slow-motion replays, and fiery debate over whether Parker was right. Some fans praised her for speaking truth to power, applauding her willingness to call out the league’s officiating inconsistencies. “Candace said what everyone’s been thinking,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Collier doesn’t flop — she got hit hard, and the refs swallowed their whistles. It’s embarrassing.” Another posted, “She’s not wrong. Some players get star treatment, others get punished for being physical. It’s a double standard, plain and simple.”
Others, however, accused Parker of fanning unnecessary drama and undermining the integrity of the game. “Every playoff series has tough calls,” one former coach commented. “To suggest bias without proof isn’t helpful — especially coming from someone with her platform.”
Still, Parker didn’t back down. In a follow-up segment the next morning on ESPN’s WNBA Countdown, she doubled down on her criticism, saying, “This isn’t about one player or one call. It’s about consistency. We can’t preach fairness and equality if we don’t hold everyone — officials, players, coaches — to the same standard. The physicality in this league has to be officiated evenly.”
That statement struck a chord — and not just with fans. Several current and former players chimed in online, with many supporting Parker’s point. Arike Ogunbowale of the Dallas Wings tweeted, “Nah, Candace is right. Some of us get called for breathing too hard, while others can bulldoze through people and it’s play on.” Chelsea Gray, Parker’s former teammate and Las Vegas Aces star, liked several posts defending Parker’s comments, while Jonquel Jones of the New York Liberty simply posted a side-eye emoji — enough to send fans into a frenzy.
Behind the scenes, league officials are reportedly not pleased. According to insiders, the WNBA’s front office has been in “quiet discussions” about Parker’s remarks, concerned that they could undermine officiating credibility during a critical playoff stretch. “They don’t want another controversy overshadowing the games,” one league source told The Athletic. “But Candace is a powerful voice, and the fans trust her. They can’t just ignore what she said.”
As for the play itself, slow-motion footage appears to show Collier taking significant contact from the Mercury’s forward while elevating for a rebound — with a clear shove to the lower back that sent her off balance. The officials allowed play to continue, likely assuming incidental contact, but the optics — Collier screaming in pain as the Mercury scored on the other end — were brutal.
After the game, Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve was visibly frustrated. “You can’t talk about player safety and then miss something like that,” she said. “If that’s not a foul, then I don’t know what is.” Her comments added fuel to the growing outrage, especially as the WNBA continues to promote its emphasis on protecting players and ensuring fair officiating.
Meanwhile, Mercury players have defended the play, insisting it was clean and competitive. “It’s the playoffs — everyone’s fighting for position,” said Natasha Cloud. “There was no intent to hurt anyone. We play hard, they play hard. That’s basketball.” Still, even some neutral analysts have admitted that the optics of the incident — combined with the league’s history of inconsistent officiating — make it a lightning rod for criticism.
This isn’t the first time Candace Parker has spoken up about what she sees as inconsistencies in how the league polices physicality and star power. Throughout her career, she’s been an outspoken advocate for fairness, equity, and transparency in the women’s game. Her willingness to hold both officials and the league accountable has made her a respected — if occasionally controversial — voice in WNBA media. “Candace doesn’t say things for clicks,” one colleague noted. “When she calls something out, it’s because she believes the game deserves better.”
The situation has now snowballed into a larger discussion about the league’s credibility and the perception of bias in officiating. Fans have begun circulating clips comparing similar plays called differently depending on the players involved. Some even pointed to disparities in how younger stars like Caitlin Clark are officiated compared to established veterans — further stoking the narrative of inconsistency that Parker highlighted.
As Napheesa Collier recovers from her injury, both teams prepare for a decisive Game 4 — but the tension surrounding the officiating has already seeped into the atmosphere. The WNBA, which prides itself on transparency and progressiveness, now faces mounting pressure to address what many see as a systemic issue.
For Candace Parker, however, the message is simple. “You can’t pick and choose when to protect players,” she said bluntly during the ESPN broadcast. “If we’re serious about fairness, it has to apply to everyone — not just the faces of the league.”
Whether fans see her as a truth-teller or a provocateur, one thing is undeniable: Parker’s words have once again forced the WNBA to look in the mirror. And as the playoffs roll on under an even brighter spotlight, the question now is whether the league will step up — or let the controversy play on in silence.
Foul or not, that play became the precursor of what some say is the WNBA’s version of the Gettysburg Address. With virtually every player who has spoken, including Caitlin Clark, expressing support for Collier, the ball is now in the WNBA’s court to respond, particularly regarding officiating, which was the primary catalyst for the push for change.
