Profar was an All-Star with the Padres last year, and he signed a 3-year deal with the Braves in the offseason
Major League Baseball suspended Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar 80 games for violating the league’s PED policy on Monday afternoon. Profar tested positive for a banned substance called chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
Profar’s suspension is effective immediately, and while he can return after 80 games, he will be ineligible to play in the 2025 postseason.
In a statement, the Braves said:
“We were surprised and extremely disappointed to learn that Jurickson Profar tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Prevention and Treatment Program. We fully support the Program and are hopeful that Jurickson will learn from this experience.”
In his own statement released by the MLB Players Association, Profar said, “Today is the most difficult day of my baseball career,” and he apologized to the Braves organization, his teammates and fans.
“It is because of my deep love and respect for this game that I would never knowingly do anything to cheat it,” he said in the statement. “I have been tested my entire career, including eight times last season alone, and have never tested positive. I would never willingly take a banned substance, but I take full responsibility and accept MLB’s decision.”
Profar signed a three-year, $42 million contract with the Braves in January after a career year with the San Diego Padres in 2024, slashing .280/.380/.459 and earning All-Star and Silver Slugger honors. He played in each of the Braves’ four games so far this season, slashing .200/.250/.200.
The Braves are winless in the 2025 season so far. They fell 6-1 to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night in Southern California, too, which was the first of a three-game series against the reigning World Series champions.
