While it is expected that the Montreal Canadiens’ management will attempt to make the playoffs this year, there is an update.
Indeed, we can assume that Kent Hughes will keep his veterans until the end of the season, but that’s not all.
Unless, of course, he receives something interesting in return or includes one of his veterans in a larger trade, they are likely to stay.
However, a former Canadiens employee recently made an excellent suggestion on social media.
As suggested by Grant McCagg, a former scout for the organization, sees a young player like Mavrik Bourque of the Dallas Stars as a great trade target for the Canadiens in a potential deal involving David Savard.
Grant McCagg suggests the Montreal Canadiens target forward Mavrik Bourque
In fact, McCagg proposes that Kent Hughes and his Stars counterpart, Jim Nill, use the two Quebec-born players as the foundation for a potential trade that goes beyond a simple rental deal.
Here is his explanation on the matter:
“I see Dallas as a potential trade partner for the Canadiens. I also see Mavrik Bourque as a target in return if Dallas wants to add one or two veterans for a playoff run.
The trade could include a young Canadiens player, a draft pick, or anything else. I’m simply saying that if Dallas is interested in one or two Canadiens veterans, this is the player I would try to build the trade around if I were Kent Hughes.”

It is unclear what the Stars’ plans are regarding Mavrik Bourque, but the team needs defensive reinforcements due to injuries affecting Miro Heiskanen and right-handed defenseman Nils Lundkvist.
A first-round pick by the Stars in 2020, Bourque is establishing himself in the NHL this season with 9 goals and 11 assists for 20 points in 54 games.
